Escaping the Snow

While we were at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, a couple of hours' train ride away from our travel trailer, we learned that a snowstorm was expected that evening in the village where our RV was parked. 6-8 inches actually. With single digit temperatures. And not warming above freezing for days.

Yeah. No thank you.

As much as the kids wanted to be snowed in Josh and I weren't ready for that kind of winter weather. We made phone calls to RV parks an hour or two south (and 3000 ft lower in elevation) until we found one with a vacancy. We booked it for a week and then actively practiced patient present-ness for the 2+ hour train ride back from the south rim of the Grand Canyon. We were going to be cutting it close.

We enjoyed the time on the train and then jumped into action the minute it pulled into the station. Josh took off running to get the truck gassed up. The kids and I picked up Teddy from the doggy day care and explained the situation to the manager at the check in desk. They graciously refunded us for leaving early and we met Josh back at the trailer just in time for the kids to grab their bags and hop in the truck while Josh disconnected us and I readied the interior for travel. We were on the road within 30 minutes of getting off the train and only an hour ahead of the anticipated blizzard.

And the adventure wasn't over yet!

We were driving in the dark, towing the trailer, and headed to an unknown location. After traveling for almost an hour Josh questioned the expected lower elevation as we hadn't been going downhill much. And then suddenly we were going downhill. We dropped 3000 feet in about 10 miles of mountain highway. Josh handled it amazingly. I was terrified.

We arrived at the campground and were glad to find it well lit and looking nice. I had done some research with Google reviews and the woman I spoke with on the phone had been wonderful but we still hadn't known exactly what we were driving into.

Our adventure was almost to a close - as soon as Josh successfully backed the rig into a small spot surrounded by large rigs in the dark.

No problem.
