As soon as we started considering this crazy idea we began searching for the right RV. There was an entire world of options and it took time to sort out what would be best for our family and our purposes.
We settled fairly quickly on wanting a travel trailer rather than a Class A, Class C, or fifth wheel. Then it was a matter of how long was too long or how short was too short. We looked at new models at dealerships (enticing!) and used models at sketchy car lots (the opposite of enticing!). I did a search on Facebook Marketplace and I found a travel trailer I really liked. Seemed to be the right length, had the amenities we had decided were crucial (a bunkhouse for the kids and a private room for Josh and I) and it had several features that were high on our wants list as well (outdoor kitchen and an ideal layout). Only problem was the travel trailer was in Ohio. I reached out to the seller anyway and we ended up messaging back and forth for several weeks. He patiently and promptly answered all of my questions. After that we compared every other RV to that one. None could top it.
We had decided to wait until the house sold before we purchased the RV as we wanted to do it with cash. I let the seller know it would be several weeks and to keep me posted if he sold it. Then we waited. And trusted that if it were the one we were supposed to have then it would be there when it was time.
And it was.
We drove Bert (the Big Red Truck) up to Ohio through the mountains of West Virginia. We drove that truck straight up a mountain, onto a narrow road with hairpin turns, and finally onto a gravel track that wound its way through beautiful trees along a steep mountainside. Now that we were here, how would we bring the rig back with us? We'd never towed anything this size before.
The sellers were incredibly patient and kind. They walked us through everything, taught us how to hook and unhook the trailer from the truck, shared some of their story with us, let me use their bathroom, then sent us on our way. Back down the curving mountain road. Towing our new-to-us travel trailer.
Josh did amazing. He handled the winding roads, the narrow bridges, the rain and wind, the mountain tunnels. By the time we made it back home late that night he had conquered any concerns over his ability to successfully tow an RV!
So fun!!!! I’m really excited for this adventure you all are going on!
